WHO WE ARE
We are a registered not for profit organisation with no government funding, that is run almost entirely by volunteers and operates in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
WHAT WE DO
We aim to make books accessible to homeless people, encourage literacy and raise awareness of homelessness. The Footpath Library gives away about 3000 free books a month to homeless people through hostels and community organisations as well as mobile services, in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
WHY WE DO IT
At The Footpath Library we believe books should be accessible to anyone who wants to read and whilst homeless people are provided with food and shelter, often their minds are malnourished. Many homeless people do not visit public libraries because they can’t get memberships due to no address, find it difficult to return a book on time, find the library environment intimidating or are not made to feel welcome. All our volunteers are passionate about reading and know how books can enrich your life.
