WHAT WE DO
We are the national peak body for the suicide prevention sector in Australia with a role in providing policy advice to governments, community awareness and public education, increased involvement in research and a future role in leading Australia’s engagement internationally.
We support communities and organisations throughout Australia, and promotes collaboration and partnerships in suicide and self harm prevention, intervention and postvention.
WHY WE DO IT
Did you know that every year, over 800 000 people in the world die from suicide? This roughly corresponds to one death every 40 seconds. One every 40 seconds! That is more lives lost each year than the number of deaths due to homicide and war combined.
Each year 65,000 Australian’s attempt to take their own lives (there are on average 130,000 total deaths per year in Australia) – of these attempts – Australia loses approximately 2,500 loved ones. We are working to half this in ten years.
